Czeżowski’s axiological concepts as full-fledged modalities

چکیده

This short note provides a tentative formalization of Czeżowski’s ideas about axiological concepts: Good and Evil are conceived of as modalities rather than as predicates. A natural account of the resulting “ethical logic” appears to be very close to standard deontic logic. If one does not resolve to become an antirealist regarding moral values, a possible way out is to become a revisionist about deontology: convert to intuitionism or other kind of revisionism for deontic logic, and remain classical for ethical logic. Existence, goodness, and beauty, are not conceived in representations as are characters of objects, but are affirmed in judgments or evaluations.

Generating Verbal and Nonverbal Utterances for Virtual Characters

We introduce an approach to multimodal generation of verbal and nonverbal contributions for virtual characters in a multiparty dialogue scenario. This approach addresses issues of turn-taking, is able to synchronize the different modalities in real-time, and supports fixed utterances as well as utterances that are assembled by a full-fledged treebased text generation algorithm. The system is im...

The Problem of Deep Competitors and the Pursuit of Epistemically Utopian Truths

According to standard scientific realism, science seeks truth and we can justifiably believe that our successful theories achieve, or at least approximate, that goal. In this paper, I discuss the implications of the following competitor thesis: Any theory we may favor has competitors such that we cannot justifiably deny that they are approximately true. After defending that thesis, I articulate...

Toward a Purely Axiological Scientific Realism

The axiological tenet of scientific realism, ‘‘science seeks true theories,’’ is generally taken to rest on a corollary epistemological tenet, ‘‘we can justifiably believe that our successful theories achieve (or approximate) that aim.’’ While important debates have centered on, and have led to the refinement of, the epistemological tenet, the axiological tenet has suffered from neglect. I offe...

Common Sense as an Axiological Presupposition of Pseudoscience

The paper deals with the phenomenon of common sense in its connection with the problem of pseudoscientific knowledge. The author position is that the modern pseudoscientists use certain properties of the common sense to continue the production of the converted forms of knowledge, and the common sense, therefore, is an axiological presupposition of pseudoscience. While the ontological basis of p...
